Wagon Trains and Settlers

Today has been a wonderful day, we have talked about the early Pilgrims and how they settled into a new way of life in America. American Indians watch a family as a covered wagon passes by on the trail to Oregon.

Both horses and oxen pull the wagons in this wagon train.

We talked about how when the Pilgrims traveled the land looking for places to build houses
That they had to live out of covered wagons on their travels. We went out side and looked at the
electrical wires leading from poles to our houses. We talked about how in those days they did not
have electric and could not just turn on a light switch to have light. So we turned out our lights and
lit a candle lantern to show the kids the way of the pioneer and how they had to light lanterns for light.

We talked about how they did not travel by cars that
cars were not even made then. So the picture was helpful
to explain to the kids that they had wagon wheels and this
was their flat tire. It now had to be fixed with tools.

And then when families settled down to make their
houses and the things they did to make it like a real home.

We talked of how the Indians and the Pilgrims would hunt
for their food. How they grew gardens, picked berries, and baked
breads. And all of their cooking was done in a fire pit.
After our discussion we went on a hunt for our lunch...
We went to the outdoors and sought out our corn haha.
OK so corn doesn't come already husked, cut and bagged but
we do what we can to make it close..they had a blast.
and eating it was even more fun.!
